What Causes Your Eyes to Be Red?

Have you ever woken up to see bloodshot eyes stare back at you in the bathroom mirror? Red, pink, or bloodshot eyes can happen to anyone when the eye becomes irritated by allergens or something changes in your normal routine. Here’s some helpful information if you’re wondering “why are my eyes red?”

Why Are My Eyes Red?

If this is the first day you’re experiencing red eyes, the condition may be easy to remedy. Some of the most common causes of red eyes include:
Red eye

  • Allergies
  • An issue with your contact lenses or eye drops
  • Dry eyes
  • An irritant in the eye, such as dust, dirt, or a larger object
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Sty (also known as “stye” is a painful lump on the edge of your eyelid)
  • Inflammation of part of the eye (blepharitis, episcleritis, iritis, keratitis, scleritis, uveitis)
  • Complication from a recent eye surgery

Home Remedies for Red Eyes

Many conditions that cause red eyes can be treated at home or may even clear up without treatment. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends trying these home remedies:

  • Use over-the-counter artificial tears to flush out any foreign objects in the eyes
  • Use over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops to treat allergies
  • Apply cool compresses (or a cool, damp washcloth) to your closed eyes a few times each day
  • Avoid common irritants including cigarette smoke, pollen, dust, chlorine, pet dander, and allergens
  • Wash your bedding and towels every day with hot water
  • Do not touch your eyes unless you have just washed your hands

When Should You See a Doctor for Red Eye?

If your red eyes persist for more than a week, you should schedule an appointment with an eye care professional. You may have an infection or more serious underlying condition which will not clear up on its own.
