Glaucoma

How to Detect Glaucoma in Early Stages

Man getting tested for glaucomaGlaucoma is a serious eye condition that can lead to blindness if not treated properly. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in seniors, but it can affect people in all age groups. Unfortunately, this disease has few warning signs and can only be detected by a doctor. The risk of vision loss makes it extremely important for people to get routine eye health exams each year, even if they do not need glasses or contacts.

Risk Factors for Glaucoma

While glaucoma isn’t a contagious disease, there are a few things that can put you at higher risk for developing it. A family history of glaucoma is one of the biggest risk factors, but there are a few other things that can put you in a higher risk category as well, such as:

  • African, Asian, or Hispanic heritage
  • Being over the age of 60
  • Thinner than average corneas
  • Elevated IOP (intraocular pressure)
  • Systemic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and sickle cell anemia
  • Steroid use

Early Warning Signs of Glaucoma

There are several different types of glaucoma, and they do not all have the same symptoms. Here are two of the most common types, and the symptoms that correspond with them.

Open-Angle Glaucoma

For the majority of people, the eye doctor will notice changes in the back of the eye before any symptoms will manifest. However, someone who does not get eye exams very often may notice blurred or missing vision, especially in the periphery. In a very advanced and untreated state, the vision will begin to tunnel, which can eventually lead to complete vision loss.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

A person with angle-closure glaucoma may have severe eye and head pain. They may also experience nausea and vomiting, and the affected eye may become red and irritated looking. Blurred vision is also a common symptom for someone experiencing angle closure.

It’s extremely important that you regularly see your eye doctor for an eye health exam. Glaucoma is only one of the multiple diseases that they screen for during these exams.
