Why Should I Protect My Eyes?

Man in sunglassesWith summer on the horizon, you will probably be spending a lot of time outside, enjoying the sun. While being outdoors is a great way to absorb some essential vitamins, it’s extremely important for you to avoid the risks of overexposure to UV light.

While most people make sure to protect their skin by applying sunscreen, many overlook their eyes, which can be at the same amount of risk, if not more. Below, we will go over the various ways to protect your eyes from the harsh sun.

Overexposure to sunlight and UV rays can lead to severe damage within your eyes, ranging from speeding up the development of cataracts to damaging the retina. Constant overexposure can also lead to the growth of eye cancer, on top of permanent eye damage.

There are several things you can do to prevent serious UV damage to your eyes.

Use Sunscreen

There is a protective eye cream to help withstand the harsh rays coming from the sun, similar to sunscreen for the skin. While there are many available options, it is best to consider looking into some sort of hypoallergenic cream, so it can protect you without causing any irritation or inflammation.

By gently applying the cream to the skin around the eye, you will direct some of the harmful light rays away from the eyes instead of having them go directly into the eyes.

Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses are another effective measure to take when protecting against the sun. It is best to use polarized sunglasses with a UV400 rating for maximum protection. Most commonly found in sporting sunglasses, these features will offer complete protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Wear Hats

Wearing hats is an excellent way to protect your skin and your eyes while walking outside. While baseball caps can provide some protection to your upper face and eyes, the best hat to wear is a dark-colored, wide-brimmed hat that reaches around the entirety of your head. This way, it protects not only your face, eyes, and scalp but also the exposed nape of your neck, which is just as prone to harm and often forgotten.
