Are These Makeup Trends Harmful?

Makeup has evolved throughout the years – from the ancient Egyptians using kohl as eyeliner to people in the Renaissance using lead to lighten their complexions to modern-day people using mica eyeshadow to make their eyes pop. It’s clear that some makeup trends have been more nefarious than others.

Today, cosmetics are generally much safer than they were in ancient times. However, it’s always worth it to look deeper into new makeup trends to ensure that they are safe, especially when the makeup is for your eyes. Your eye area is very sensitive and susceptible to infections, so it’s important that you’re vigilant about what you put near your eyes.

Are Magnetic Eyelashes Bad for Your Eyes?

Magnetic eyelashes are advertised as the new easy way to apply your eyelashes and are generally considered safe. However, as with any eye makeup, it comes with a few risks – using magnetic eyelashes can cause infection if your hands are unclean when you are handling them. You may also be susceptible to irritation and/or swelling if you have an allergic reaction.

Additionally, you run the potential risk of losing lashes if you do not properly apply the magnetic lashes according to the product recommendations.

Most importantly, even though magnetic lashes have met the FDA’s cosmetics standards, it is still suggested that you check the chemicals used in cosmetic adhesives before using them on your eyes.

Is Permanent Eyeliner Safe?

Permanent eyelinerPermanent eyeliner is made for people who do not want to apply eyeliner every day – it is also an option for people with physical limitations that make the process more difficult. Like a tattoo, it is applied with needles and is generally permanent —though it may slightly fade over the years as your skin regenerates.

Once your qualified practitioner sterilizes their tools, the process is considered safe. However, like with any procedure, there are some risks that you should be aware of before you jump in. Check that your practitioner is using high-quality inks and that an allergy test is done before the application.

A final precaution you can take to ensure the health of your eyes is to visit your eye doctor regularly. During your routine exam, your eye doctor will check the health of your eyes and they can identify early signs of any issues.
