An eye freckle also called a nevus, is a spot of color that can grow on your eye. It is commonly located near the iris, in front of the eye, or on the retina. They are almost always benign and are typically compared to a mole or freckle growing on the skin of one’s body.
Contrary to what some may believe, eye freckles are relatively common and are usually harmless. An eye freckle can be compared to any other beauty mark found on the body – they simply exist as a discolored spot on the eye. In rare cases, the nevus can turn into melanoma, otherwise known as skin cancer.
Since eye freckles are deemed harmless in most cases, they do not need to be removed unless your eye doctor tells you otherwise. If it is something you are worried about, you should consult with your eye doctor for professional advice. If an eye freckle does need to be removed, it is usually done through surgery. Depending on the circumstances, either a tiny blade or laser is used to remove the nevus from the eye.
Unfortunately, there is no way surefire way to prevent a nevus from forming within your eye. These can form in anyone’s eyes, regardless of age, race, or gender. The most important thing is that you wear proper UV protection, such as sunglasses, to protect your eyes in a similar way to how you would protect your skin.
Eye freckles generally do not require treatment as they are almost always harmless. The only instance where they might require any form of treatment is if your eye doctor thinks that the nevus may turn into melanoma. Most times, your doctor will take a photo of the nevus so that it can be properly monitored for changes at your yearly eye exams. This is one of many reasons why it’s important for you to have regular eye exams, even if you don’t need glasses or contacts.
