Woman Applying Eye Drops for Dry Eyes At Night

Have you noticed your eyes become dry at night? Don’t worry—this is generally easy to solve with a few expert tips. Let’s talk about what you can do if you have dry eyes at night.

What is dry eye, and what are the symptoms?

Dry eye can refer to various eye conditions which cause symptoms such as:

  • A stinging, burning sensation
  • A scratchy or gritty feeling
  • Red eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Mucus around or inside your eyes
  • Excessive tearing in your eyes — This may sound strange, but your eyes may overproduce tears, or produce the wrong type of tears if your eyes are overly dry.

What causes dry eyes at night, and how can I solve the problem?

You may notice your dry eyes get worse only in the evening. This may be caused by:

  • Dry air in your home— If you work outside the home all day, you could notice dry eye symptoms when you get back from work. Try using a humidifier to add moisture back into the air.
  • Fixating on a single object for too long— If you come home to sit at your computer, read a book, or stare at the television, you may not blink frequently enough to re-moisturize your eyes. Try to follow the 20-20-20 rule, taking a break every 20 minutes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Your contact lenses— Different eyes respond better to different types of lenses. Throughout the day, your contact lenses may dry out your eyes. Try asking your eye doctor about contacts made of a different material.
  • Sleeping pills or other medications — If you take a medicine every night, one of the side effects could be dry eyes. Talk with the prescribing physician of this medication about the potential side effects.

You may also want to try out some other easy ways to relieve dry eyes. If these common solutions don’t work for you, make an appointment with an ophthalmologist. You could have a more serious condition like corneal dystrophy which affects 2% of the U.S. population.
