Have you ever noticed that your eyes tend to become drier during the winter months? This phenomenon isn’t a coincidence – as the weather cools and people crank up the heat in their homes, the air inside can become extremely dry, which leads to dry eyes.
According to research, more than 20 million Americans suffer from dry eye. The symptoms include:
Thankfully, there are several common ways to help sooth dry eye – using artificial tears, taking fish oil supplements, and reducing contact lens use (if you wear them) can all reduce the symptoms of dry eye.
But did you know there’s another easy and effective method to help alleviate dry eye? Using a humidifier can help significantly ease the symptoms of dry eye.
Many medical practitioners recommend using a humidifier during the winter months when the air is extra dry. Humidifiers add moisture back into your bedroom which keeps your tears from evaporating too quickly. Thus, it improves your dry eye symptoms.
If you live in a particularly dry climate, you may want to run your humidifier all year long — not just in the winter months.
When choosing your humidifier, there are a lot of things to consider including the size of the model and its energy efficiency. However, to get the best results for your eyes specifically, you want to look for one that is either evaporative or ultrasonic. These types of humidifiers emit a cleaner mist than some of the other types which makes them a healthier option.
Please note, an essential oil diffuser will not work the same as a humidifier – they do not create moisture in the air the same way that humidifiers do.
There is no need to spend the winter months suffering from dry and uncomfortable eyes – utilize artificial tears, fish oil supplements, and humidifiers. You should also be sure to check out our other blog on ways to relieve dry eyes.
