What Do Polarized Lenses Do?

Couple wearing polarized lensesWhile sunglasses can do a lot to reduce brightness, they don’t do very much to reduce glare. Glare is especially prevalent for anyone who spends a lot of time on water or snow, since both of those surfaces reflect light. This is where polarized lenses come in – these lenses cut down on glare by preventing glare-causing horizontal light from directly hitting the eye, making them perfect for activities like boating or snowboarding!

What Are the Benefits of Polarized Lenses?

The reflection of sunlight off of water and snow causes a high-glare situation that can be remedied by using polarized lenses. Benefits of this type of lens include:

  • Less eye strain
  • Clearer vision, even in bright light
  • Reduced reflection and glare
  • Increased color contrast

One disadvantage of polarized lenses is they make it difficult to use LCD screens. For example, this type of lens is not recommended for airplane pilots as it can make it difficult to see various instruments in the cockpit.

UV VS. Polarized

Polarization is not a substitute for UV protection, and polarized glasses do not guarantee UV protection. It is important to ensure that the lenses are labeled with both — especially sunglasses.

UV light can be just as damaging to your eyes as it is to your skin. There are both short-term and long-term issues associated with over-exposure to UV light.

A short-term issue, called Photokeratitis (also called snow blindness), is a painful inflammation of the cornea that can cause excessive tearing, photophobia, and even temporary vision loss. In the long-term, UV light can lead to Macular Degeneration, accelerate the growth of cataracts, and even cause cancer in the eye.

However, when you purchase sunglasses with UV protection and polarized lenses, you protect your eyes while also reducing glare, which is the best of both worlds! EyeBuyDirect offers a variety of customizable sunglasses with UV protection – you can get prescription or non-prescription and you can add on a polarized coating for around $30.

If you want your sunglasses to also include vision correction, you can use the VisionCheck from EyeQue to test your vision at home. Once you have the results, you can use them to order sunglasses online!
