By the year 2030, an estimated 117 million Americans will be affected by major eye issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. This figure doesn’t include more common eye problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia— in 2010, about 63% of all Americans require some form of vision correction in order to see clearly. Here are five signs that you need to pay more attention to your vision health:
If you suffer from frequent headaches or blurred vision, your eyes may have issues focusing light—in other words, you may have an astigmatism. This common condition causes your eyes to improperly interpret the refraction of light, which could impact the overall quality of your vision.
As you age, you develop a common condition called presbyopia, more commonly known as “reading vision”. Usually around 35 years of age, the muscles around your eyes tighten and your lens harden, which causes difficulty in switching your focus between objects which are far away or closer to your face.
Another common issue you may experience as you age is the development of cataracts, which create cloudy areas in your field of vision. Cataracts can also make you more sensitive to changes in light and weaken your eyesight in the dark.
If your eyes feel gritty and swollen, and you can visibly see them turning pink, you may have conjunctivitis. The most common form of conjunctivitis is pink eye, which is very contagious, but you may also just suffer sensitivity to allergens in the air.
Do you have trouble watching TV, reading road signs, or enjoying live events, like concerts where the performers are far away? You may be suffering from near sightedness, also called myopia. On the other hand, if you have issues focusing on your computer screen, books, or other nearby objects, you may have hyperopia—better known as farsightedness.
If it’s been over 5 years since your last eye exam, you should get one ASAP. Your vision may have changed, as well as your ocular health.
