An older man being tested for cataracts

June is Cataract Awareness Month. We want to make sure you know some important information about cataracts. The Kellogg Eye Center explains that a cataract is “a clouding of the lens of your eye.” But what do you really need to know about cataracts?

Here are three important facts you need to know about cataracts:

#1: There’s a 90% chance you will have a cataract by the time you’re 65

While there are several potential causes for cataracts, almost all cataracts are age-related, forming after the age of 40. About half of all people experience some vision loss due to cataracts once they reach the age of 85.

#2: Fortunately, vision loss due to cataracts can be reversed for most people

In the US, 95% of cataract removal surgeries effectively restore the patient’s vision. However, it’s important to remember that cataracts are not the only potential cause of blindness. Ophthalmologists recommend you schedule comprehensive eye exams on a regular basis depending on your age so your eye doctor can identify any diseases or other harmful conditions as soon as possible and prevent vision loss.

#3: There are risk factors for cataracts that you can control

Although we can’t stop ourselves from aging, eye experts have identified some behaviors which are associated with the formation of cataracts. Here are some things you can do to help lower your risk of getting cataracts:

  • Limit your alcohol consumption
  • Quit smoking
  • Exercise regularly and maintain a balanced diet
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors to prevent direct exposure to UV rays
  • Wear protective glasses in situations which could cause eye injuries, such as when you use power tools, around chemicals, etc.

Bonus: Keep track of your own eye health

While you need a comprehensive eye exam from your eye doctor every year, it is important to know how your vision is changing over time on a more regular basis.
